I recently came across a video published by Pirate Software ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioqSvLqB46Y ) discussing the EU initiative informally referred to as Stop Killing Games. The video unfortunately contains several misunderstandings and mischaracterizations of the initiative’s actual goals - particularly around game preservation, consumer rights, and access to digital content.
Given that Markéta Gregorová is a member of the European Parliament representing the EUPP - ( and we’re of course deeply committed to digital rights, transparency, and open access ) - her voice would carry significant weight in clearing up this confusion. Much more so than mine.
I’d like to kindly suggest that she (or someone from her Pirate delegation) consider reaching out to the creator of Pirate Software to explain what the initiative is truly about.
A public clarification could go a long way in correcting misconceptions and encouraging more informed, constructive dialogue within the gaming and digital rights communities.
Important note: Pirate Software is currently one of the most influential voices in the gaming and game development communities.
This request comes with the understanding that his platform reaches a wide and engaged audience, and has caused quite a controversy recently with his misinformed video.
Maybe better more so to contact PewDiePie for greater support to the Gamers’ Initiative? Signing is ending next month.
If Marketa would step in the discussion, all the other streamers will feel quite a acknowledgement of their support for the Initiative, against the wishes of Pirate Software.
This basic thing alone can put Pirate Software in a much tougher position, and hopefully he reconsiders, since Marketa’s words (as European legislator) would absolutely mean much more than PirateSoftware’s take on legislation. For sure.
He’s absolutely in!
I will have to remind everyone that PewDiePie has been a Pirate supporter in the past, thanks to Marketa’s chair (yes, it was a funny one, and brilliant, video bellow).
But if he goes and makes a video about supporting SKG Initiative, it will be the megaboost we needed!
Thanks for flagging this! Sorry for not seeing the post until now. Somehow I got distracted by the IGF last week, and then childcare once I was back home.
Anyhow, the video you linked has definitely been detrimental to the initiative, and it led to a quite extensive rebuke from the guy who started the initiative, that you can watch here: The end for Stop Killing Games.
I don’t think Marketa would benefit from getting into mudslinging with a youtuber with a bone to pick with the campaign, but I will reach out to her to ask her to push the initiative again, as it is entering its final stretch. If you disagree with that, feel free to reach out directly to her.
I would also like to point out that the last week the campaign has really picked up momentum, and it is now looking like we have a decent chance of reaching the needed 1 million signatures if the pace of the last week is maintained. To that end, please share a plea to sign the petition on social media today with the tag #Stopkillinggames!
The Initiative has reached 1 Million now, nearly 1,1Million. More are obviously still good to account for invalid signatures but chances are pretty good that it reaches the threashold
