Ahoy everyone again,

due to more recent developments I would like to try to give this a new drive.

On the issue of Friendica:
May I propose something, since administration seems to be a bit difficult as far as I can tell from this thread.

1. The PPDE does maintain a Friendica server(piratenpartei.social), which we can do very well since it is maintained by one of the Friendica developers(who is also a Pirate).
   Why dont we merge efforts into one for the PPEU as a whole?
   I am very certain that everyone involved could be swayed to join forces.
   My idea would be that you(PPEU) mandate our Friendica admin or the PPDE as a whole to spin up a PPEU Friendica server. (While the PPDE server would be shut down and migrated/merged or maintained alongside(if not too much of a burden)).
   That would wrap up our main Friendica issue.
2. On the issue of Friendica integration to social media managers,
   I am currently working on this with our Friendica developer.
   As it seems either of these issues is currently our road blocker: API: verify_credentials can be called with any scope by annando · Pull Request #15557 · friendica/friendica · GitHub or Mastodon OAuth fails on instances that don't support 'profile' scope · Issue #1245 · gitroomhq/postiz-app · GitHub
   As you can see one has already been merged so I will know if this has been fixed soon.
   TL;DR: Friendica should soon be able to integrate (mostly) with all applications that support the Mastodon API(and in particular we will make sure it works with Postiz).

Other issues/opportunity for cooperation I see:
Many Pirate PeerTube, as well as Mastodon servers are unmaintained and/or out-of-date.

Last month Version v8.0.2 got released.
Version 5.2.1 got released Aug 30, 2023; Version 4.2.2 got released Jun 28, 2022; both have known security vulnerabilities, lack features and QoL improvements.
Updating and maintaining them would be important, to improve security, user experience etc.

Ideas PeerTube:

While we could again take this up each on our own I see opportunities for synergies, although with some caveats.

• Having a well working video server generally speaking is a good idea, that way we dont have to host on YT or other platforms (potentially with other downsides when embedding to our web sites etc)
• Making them Federate is just an overall improvement, lots of content can be interesting not just on our web pages, but also for a wider audience. Being able to follow, comment, share and like our video channels would therefore be nice.
• Although I see some issues when maintaining one unified VoD platform:
  • We might see a bloat of disc space usage, and whoever hosts the server might face a lot of costs.
  • Therefore it should obviously be invite only, no public user registration, which could add friction that prevents local party branches from using it. Thereby defeating the point a bit.
  • Which is why it might be better for now if most Pirate Parties handle their own server, although I personally would be open to cooperation.

I actually expected the situation here to be much worse,
overall it seems that the a lot of servers are mostly maintained and at least have a few active users on them.

Ideas Mastodon:

My initial idea was similar to the question of @boiert, but seeing how most are somewhat maintained I think for now we should focus on PeerTube and having some Fediverse presence of the PPEU in general(aka an PPEU Account).

If there’s a large enough “demand” for it, then we shouldn’t have a problem with running a Mastadon server (from a tech perspective).

For Peertube, the issue I potentially see is about budget. That’d depend on how many videos we’d expect to be uploaded, how often they are streamed, what quality etc. I’d need to have a closer look, but we’re probably capped out at around 100-200GB of storage with current budget.

I agree with David, there’s the budget, and need / targets.

If PPEU hosts its own Mastodon account and minimal quality Council / Board Meetings, that can be easier to manage.

But if it develops into maintaining instances which would host European pirates, that is another subject.

For now, until we restore functional bank account access, this is out of the picture. With a functionnal bank account we can start the crowdfunding efforts, and it might be possible for pirates to finance the necessary infrastructure.
